Winter Storms

Winter storms are common in Canada, but their potential impacts mean it is a good idea to plan for winter weather hazards.

Before a winter storm

As the winter season approaches, it's a good idea to check your home. Have heating equipment and chimneys maintained and cleaned, and caulk or weatherstrip doors and windows. In addition, you can prepare for winter storms by:

  • Clearing rain gutters and downspouts
  • Planning for power outages
  • Replenish your emergency kit with supplies and add extra blankets
  • Write down emergency numbers and program them into your cell phone. If a storm is on the way, you should also charge your devices and consider purchasing and charging a power bank and ensure your fuel tanks are filled.

During and after winter storms

The safest place to be during a winter storm is at home, indoors. If you cannot stay home, wear several warm layers and get out of the wind to avoid wind chill. In addition:

  • Bring pets inside and ensure livestock have shelter and drinking water
  • Watch for signs of frostbite (numbness or white areas)
  • Check on family, friends, and neighbours, especially if they are vulnerable
  • If you lose power, turn off appliances and leave one light on
  • Use only battery-powered lights, glow sticks, and avoid candles
  • Never use BBQs, camping stoves, or fuel-powered heaters indoors
  • Monitor media and social media for updates
  • Install and monitor a weather app on your cell phone.
  • When the storm is over, be careful to shovel safely and take lots of breaks.
