Wildfire

Getting ready before a wildfire
A wildfire is an uncontrolled, unpredictable, and potentially destructive fire. It can be in forests, or closer to homes and businesses. Wildfires can be caused by weather or human activity, and can spread very quickly. It is important to take steps ahead before a fire occurs to prevent damage and prepare to act quickly to protect yourself and your family.

FireSmart Canada
FireSmart Canada is a national program that helps Canadians increase neighbourhood resilience to wildfire and minimize its negative impacts. For more tips on how you can reduce the impacts of wildfires on your home, visit the FireSmart website.

Ways to prepare:
Before a fire happens:
- Pack a "go" kit with food, medications, clothing, and supplies for your pets to take with you if you must evacuate;
- Plan a meetup location with your family in case you are not together if an evacuation occurs;
- Keep copies of important documents in a different location (work, family member's house)
- If a wildfire is in your area:
- Back your car into the garage (if you have one) and leave keys in the ignition;
- Pack your car with essentials and valuables;
- Close your windows and doors;
- Move furniture away from windows and remove light drapes;
- Remove combustible materials away from your house;
- Fill containers with water to fight the fire;
- Put a ladder against the front of your house;
- Turn off gas at the meter or propane tank;
- Turn on porch and other outside lights.
