Hurricanes

Hurricane season in Nova Scotia runs from June through November, when waters are warmer and can produce tropical depressions, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Hurricanes can produce dangerous winds and heavy rain, and pounding surf and storm surge can cause serious flooding.

Before a hurricane

At the beginning of hurricane season, it is a good idea to prepare your home:

  • Refill and update your emergency kit as needed
  • Trim and remove damaged trees and limbs near your home
  • Clear and secure rain gutters and downspouts and keep storm drains clear
  • Ensure your sump pumps are working
  • Write down emergency numbers and program them into your phone

If a storm is predicted:

  • Monitor local weather reports
  • Fill your car's gas tank
  • Secure loose objects around your home
  • Charge cell phones and other devices
  • Consider purchasing charging banks and charge them

During and after hurricanes

Once a storm begins, it's best to stay inside or seek secure shelter. In addition:

  • Do not go to the coastline or leave your community to watch the storm
  • Stay away from windows and doors
  • If you lose power, turn off appliances and leave one light on
  • Use battery-powered lights, glow sticks, and avoid using candles
  • Check on friends and neighbours, especially vulnerable people
  • Monitor media and social media for updates
  • After the storm, watch out for debris and downed power lines
  • Throw out spoiled food
  • Cleanup any flooding within 48 hours to prevent mould
